WooThemes Modding Series: Turning Rockstar into Moviestar

Posted on 25. Nov, 2009 by admin in Tutorials | 7 responses

To prepare for the upcoming first ever WordPress theme mod competition, we have decided the publish a 4 part tutorial series on modding WordPress premium themes.

We’ve chosen Rockstar theme from WooThemes for this purpose because it’s free download for everyone, high customizable and the fact that we just love WooThemes.

The new modded theme will be named Moviestar. Here are what we will be covering for the next 4 days.

Part 1: Personalize the Theme Options.
Part 2: Declutter – remove stuff we don’t need.
Part 3: Customize the Look & Feel.
Part 4: Adding the Extra Features.

The entry level for this tutorial series will be fairly easy. Anyone who has a thin grasp of HTML, CSS and PHP would be able to follow.

Stay tuned.

So… I want to thank you for going through your process and doing some tutorials about it. I liked following this little series.
With that said, I’d like to say that I was expecting a more in depth and detailed run through of each step rather than seeing a couple minor changes on each stage.
I know premium mod is a touchy subject with a lot of people in the WP community lately but I like the idea, I think it’s needed for the greater good and in that can help new people get into theme development and help wp theme devs get better at what they do by collaboration.
    Anyways… that’s my 2c…. thanks man :)

@Chuck: Definitely. Thanks for your feedback. I’m currently planning on a series which will replace the whole theme framework of the premium themes. The tutorial series will be target on intermediate level.

Hey I’d love to see more tutorials on completely removing all of the WooThemes branding from the themes. I think this would be useful to a lot of people who are taking the themes are reselling them, myself included.

    Thanks!

Why would you want to take someone’s hard work and resell them… that is just out right disrespectful? GPL is on thing. But taking someone else’s lively hood is another.

I have suggestion. Why don’t we all pool our money and hire on of the Rock Theme designer to design a framework or theme. And than everyone else mod it and upload the code, and comment on it… in other word comment on the child theme, etc.

That way the Rock Star Design is getting is money and supporting himself and also knows that is theme is meant to be mod.

Zee are you stupid? The GPL licence allows us to take the theme, make modifications and resell them to our clients. For limited budget that cannot afford for me to write each and every single line of code, doing this is the most economical options for myself and my clients. And WooThemes has nothing against this at all.
